About me...

I recently moved to Stafford, VA. I've lived in many places around the country, several with big food scenes.

Am I a foodie? Not quite. I don't have a very refined palette. I don't really eat at that many fancy places. I just like what I like.

Join me as I figure out what I like to eat around here!

FOODE

On Saturday, I finally went to FOODE! I was looking forward to going there all of last week. I first heard about FOODE when I was reading about the whole Locavore movement and I've wanted to go there ever since. I warn you... this might be one of my longer descriptions... but this place deserves it!

The entrance is very cute. You walk down a pathway from the main street to the restaurant. When we walked in, it was a tiny bit chaotic... but in a good way! It looks like I wasn't the only one who wanted to go there that day! Inside, there are brick arches and you can imagine the room being a part of historic Fredericksburg. There are a couple of sofa chairs and a few tables. There is also a long community table with stools instead of chairs. There isn't a lot of seating so if you are going at a really busy time, you might have to wait for somewhere to sit!

View from the community table

When you go in, you pick up a menu from the counter where the register is. The menus were all printed on paper because apparently they change their selection pretty often. The menu isn't very long, but it is diverse. Since the menu changes so often, I'm sure you can go back and not be bored by the choices. You order at the register and then go sit down.

I ordered the chicken quesadillas and my husband, a true Texan, couldn't resist ordering the brisket. I was a little nervous that he would be disappointed with the restaurant because it wouldn't live up to his brisket standards.

We went in around lunch time. Even though it has only been around for four weeks, it is already popular and the tables were full. We sat down at the community table, but then we pulled the high chair up to the table. Oops! The community table is higher than the rest of the tables so it was at my daughter's forehead level! Luckily, the people at one of the tables near us were almost done, so we quickly moved our stuff over there.

The kitchen is one floor above the restaurant and is connected via an outdoor staircase. Once an order is ready, someone brings it downstairs, comes through the front door, and calls out the name on the order. I watched this while our order was being prepared and I wondered what they do when the weather is bad.

When our food arrived, I realized that I was actually nervous! You know when you build something up so much in your head? All I had been thinking about all week was about how they pride themselves on quality local ingredients.... how the chef had worked with Kevin Gillespie (who I am only slightly obsessed with)... how I couldn't WAIT to try the food!! I was thinking about it so much that I actually had a dream about it where I went and the food was terrible and it was so disappointing!

Well, ladies and gentleman. I did not have to worry.

My husband's brisket came as a large sandwich. Did it taste like Texas brisket? No... but in a good way! It wasn't trying to be something that it isn't. I've been to many barbecue places that claim to have "Texas Barbecue," but what you end up with is what the chef thinks Texas barbecue should taste like and you get a very artificial and overpowering kind of flavoring. This was FOODE brisket. Cooked perfectly so it was extremely tender and moist. Seasoned really well and just enough to bring out the flavor of the meat. It was very very good. There was potato salad on the side which was really yummy, too!

A brisket sandwich that satisfies even a Texan's hunger.
Sorry for the low picture quality! The picture doesn't do the sandwich justice.

My chicken quesadillas did not let me down, either. There were juicy chunks of white chicken meat, beans, and the perfect amount of cheese. The bread was really fresh and yummy too and the sauce on top complimented everything perfectly. Honestly, I wasn't as big a fan of the rice and tomato relish on the side. It's not that it tasted bad with the whole meal, but I just didn't need it. I enjoyed my quesadillas the way they were!

There was also a small size with 3 pieces, but my husband wanted to try some so I got the large!

Finally, it was time for me to order dessert. They had several choices that I wanted but I really wanted to try the hot cocoa most of all. I am a sucker for good quality hot chocolate and/or cocoa. The best I've ever had was in a small cafe in Venice, Italy. Here in the good 'ol US of A, the best I've had is at the aptly named Hot Chocolate in Chicago. The best around here? It must be FOODE.

Please hold my calls...

They cook it on the stove so order it a little bit earlier than you normally would for a dessert. It comes with cinnamon whipped cream, which at first was a little worrisome for me. Cinnamon can make desserts really sing, but sometimes people add too much or use low quality cinnamon and it starts to taste pretty bad. Not the case here. The whipped cream is as rich as frosting and has the perfect amount of cinnamon and sugar. It complements the rich cocoa perfectly and melts slowly into it like a marshmallow. I would come back here just to have it again. And again. And again. I can't stop thinking about it.

My husband tried some and then entertained my daughter while I enjoyed the rest. And by "enjoyed" I mean tuned out everyone and everything else around me and had a special moment with my mug of cocoa.

Oh... FOODE... I'll be back.

The Icing

I love cake. I mean... most people do... but I really REALLY love cake! When the whole cupcake craze started, I was all for it. After all, what is a cupcake except a personal sized cake with a higher frosting to cake ratio? I've had cupcakes from well known places like Magnolia, Cake Love, Georgetown Cupcakes, etc. Fear not, fellow Staffordians... Staffordites? You don't have to travel to New York or even D.C. to get great cupcakes! We have them right here!

When I first moved here, I did a search of nearby restaurants and stores and I found The Icing. The location is really convenient because it is close to the 95 exit on Courthouse so it is a perfect place to stop when you are going somewhere.

The first time I tried the cupcakes there, I was expecting them to be pretty average. Boy was I wrong!! The cupcakes there are AWESOME! My favorite are the Classic ones which are white cupcakes with chocolate buttercream. The cake was moist and perfectly sweet without being overly sticky. The buttercream was an amazing consistency and had a chocolate flavor that could quell even the most monstrous cravings!

They have standard flavors that they offer every day and then a rotating schedule of special flavors that you can read about here.  They occasionally have open houses which sound amazing, but I haven't been to one yet. Apparently, the one coming up this Saturday will have up to 15 types of cake to try! Proceeds go to the Fredericksburg SPCA.

The Icing also has cakes, pies, bread, and other baked goods... but really... if I have a choice between cupcakes and anything else... you know what I'm going to choose.

I'll post pictures here the next time I grab some cupcakes!

Mango Juice

No... mango juice isn't a new restaurant that you haven't heard of. You know that one food or drink you could have all the time? No matter what your mood or what you are eating, you will always jump on the opportunity to have some? Well for me it's mango juice.

Sure there are great ethnic stores in Woodbridge... and less great ones in Fredericksburg... but what about here in good old Stafford? Never fear... great mango juice is here!

My first hint that there was real mango juice in Stafford was when I went to Bloom and saw a brand I recognized from ethnic stores... Looza! I was excited, but less excited when I saw the price. $5 a bottle? Really? Once in a while there was a sale and there were 2 for $6 but that's still a lot. The sturdy glass bottles say they hold 4 servings but you know that really means 3. Still, as my only choice, I picked up a couple bottles every now and then when there was a sale.

Whoever named this company is a real Looza

In the ethnic food aisles of all the grocery stores, there are many different brands of mango juice at pretty low prices. Some are as low as $1 a carton for the same amount of juice that you find in the Looza bottles. I tried many of them and was really disappointed. Ceres is the worst, by the way. I couldn't even finish the carton. Still, I kept trying... and I finally found awesome mango juice at Giant for $1 a carton!!

Yummy

So, there you have it, folks. Yummy mango juice at reasonable prices in Stafford. You're welcome.

Coming Soon!

There are a few places coming soon that I am really excited to try out.

Zibibbo 73 - A somewhat upscale Italian restaurant located in the Aquia Park Shopping and Professional Center. According to frederickburg.com, it will be a "white-napkin" Italian place. We don't go out for Italian that often, but if it's good, we just might!

Sake Thai and Sushi Bar - I always comment about how two of my favorite types of food, sushi and Thai, are missing in Stafford. Of course, we drive once in a while to Fredericksburg to get some sushi, but I want something close by! This restaurant is supposed to have a wide sushi selection and a Thai chef! It is supposed to have a fireplace and waterfall, which should be interesting. It will be at 65 Dunn Drive, so really close to everything! I can't wait to try it out. If it is decent, it will definitely be added to my list of regular places to go!

Fresh Chops Butcher Shop & Seafood - This is possibly what I am most excited about. This store is going to open in Doc Stone Commons. According to fredericskburg.com, they are going to have things like grass-fed beef and lamb, organic chicken, wild-caught fish and organic eggs. I'm so excited for this! We have lots of regular grocery stores in Stafford, but no specialty shops like this. I can't wait to try out the seafood selection. My husband and I love to cook fish and we have a hard time finding quality fish in the area. I want to go there as soon as it opens!

Kabob Corner

So what is my favorite place to eat in Stafford? Kabob Corner!!

I took this picture with my phone while waiting for my husband to go inside and pick up some yummy food!

The address on the website is for a different location. The one in Stafford is located at 1515 Stafford Market Pl # 105. It is in the same plaza as Target, across the parking lot from the TJ Maxx.

When I moved to Stafford, I never thought I would have quality kabobs so close to home! Don't drive all the way to the DC area, because these are some great kabobs.

All entrĂ©es come with rice, a side, salad, and a huge naan (bread). The food is made fresh and it is awesome. My favorite thing to get is the bone-in chicken kabob. It takes a little longer to cook, so don't get it if you are in a rush, but the wait is worth it. My husband's favorite is the lamb kabob. I'm a big fan of that, too. Both of us agree on our favorite side... the eggplant! I'm not usually a big eggplant fan, but it is really good. I've had a couple other sides and different types of kabobs and I've never been disappointed.

The guy in charge is awesome, too. He remembers regular customers and their favorite orders. When we call in a take out order, before we even tell him our name, he knows it is us by what we want!

There are a few tables, chairs, and a TV inside so you can eat there if you want, but it is more of a take out place.

They are going to be opening another branch in Fredericksburg soon. I'll post details on that one once they open and I go there.
